Update December 2008

A Progress Report on Fundraising and Reconstruction

  • Fundraising began in July 2007 and included an insert in The Friend.
  • By March 2008 £12,000 had been raised, which was sent to GUP, Bangladesh.
  • In June 2008 the Executive Director of GUP, S A Wahab, sent his first report, with photos of the reconstruction work (see photos below).

He reported that "the work of the construction of Peace Library and renovation of Peace Centre is going on in full swing. Construction Work of Peace Library up to roof has been has been completed and repairing work of the roof of old two storied building has been completed. Roof of the dormatory near the mess house was replace with earthen tiles and other repairing work is going on. By this time we have set up an orchid house in Peace Centre. The money that has sent by you is near to expended. I am very much afraid, due to the price hike of the construction materials, it is almost double than the estimate of last year."

  • In response a further £3,360 has been sent, and the fund will remain open into 2009.
  • Over 100 individuals, organisations and trusts have contributed directly, with many more contributing through their Quaker Meeting.
  • Quaker meetings from Tokyo to Texas have been involved.
