The Appeal
The appeal was launched in July 2007 with a target of £12,000. However, the destruction following Cyclone Sidr in November 2007 more than doubled the cost of building materials and by July 2008 we realised that, although the original target amount had been raised, with inflation compounded by the fall in value of sterling, the real requirements had doubled. Slow but steady progress continued to be made with help from Friends in Japan and the USA, but the work slowed down considerably until in March 2009 the project was awarded a £6,000 relief grant by Quaker Peace & Social Witness. The appeal was closed in October 2009 at a total of £22,873 to add to £1,522 previously raised by Settle Local Meeting.

Plantation (Orchid and fruit Plants)

In order to make the centre beautiful and at the same time generate some income about 800 orchid plants were set up in a greenhouse in the peace centre and have started flowering. Also more than 50 fruit plants (BAU Kul and Apple Kul – newly improved varieties developed by the scientist of the Bangladesh Agricultural University) were cultivated in the peace centre and these too are fruiting.
